As a Social Scientist you will perform the following duties:
Serve as a Social Scientist in the Warning Research and Development Division at the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL). Manage a social science research program designed to understand and apply results on the behavior of humans, and how they interpret weather data, process information and utilize it effectively. Coordinate a multidisciplinary team of social scientists who use current social science theoretical models and methods applicable to weather and hydrologic challenges. Utilize current theoretical and applied social science models and methods to evaluate cultural and behavioral responses to extreme weather events. Develop briefings, reports and recommendations regarding social science research results and plans. Coordinate organizational and scientific capabilities with scientific stakeholders (e.g., laboratories, Cooperative Institutes, federal agencies, universities and research organizations). Represent the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) with internal and external stakeholders focusing on communicating technical information to non-scientific audiences. To qualify for the 0101 series:
EDUCATION:
A. Degree:
behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR B. Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. OR C. Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. -AND-SPECIALIZED
Experience:
Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the next lower grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This experience need not have been in the federal government. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies; knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. To qualify at the ZP-4 or GS-13 level:

Experience:
In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements above applicants must possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the ZP-3 or GS-12 in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following:
Providing technical or professional support for the evaluation of cultural or behavioral responses to extreme weather conditions or hydrologic challenges; Conducting research projects with a strong emphasis on social impacts and environmental science (extreme weather or climate); and Providing a social science framework for public awareness and education in response to severe weather events and impacts of climate changes.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
